NHL Trade Rumors: Will the Philadelphia Flyers Be Gettin' Giggy in Philly?

The Philadelphia Flyers have made it pretty evident that they will make some sort of splash come the February 28 trade deadline, maybe even before then. The Flyers made an attempt to land Jamie Langenbrunner, offering up a second and fifth round pick for his services. The New Jersey Devils ended up taking a lesser offer from the Dallas Stars, in order to avoid trading their captain to their rival.

It was believed that the Flyers were in the market for a forward, but that might no longer be the case. There have been rumors swirling around that Jean-Sebastien Giguere could very well be headed to Philadelphia, and it might actually make sense. Giguere is on the last year of his contract, so he is likely to be traded if he is willing to waive his no-trade clause.

Giguere won the Stanley Cup with the Anaheim Ducks back in 2007, and has a fair amount of playoff experience, which the Flyers could most certainly use come April. Boucher and Bobrovsky have been solid for the Flyers thus far, but there are concerns about Bobrovsky and his lack of playoff experience.

Bringing Giguere to Philadelphia would most certainly solidify the goaltender position, and could very well be exactly what the Flyers need to get over that hump that they have struggled with since Ron Hextall. It would also make sense for the Flyers, since they probably wouldn't have to give up a whole lot to acquire him.

Brian Burke is looking to rebuild, so he would most likely command prospects and picks to build for the future. Philadelphia has been known to trade high draft picks in order to acquire NHL Veterans for a lengthy playoff run, and they haven't always been successful. It seems likely that the Flyers would be more than willing to trade picks away if it meant landing Giguere.

That being said, Giguere makes $6 million this year. Before that number scares the hell out of you, take into consideration that the Flyers will not have to pay his full salary, only a prorated portion of it.

Assuming the Flyers waited until the February 28 deadline, the Flyers would only need roughly $1,217,782 to fit him in. My math may be slightly off but, it wouldn't be any more than $2 million. That is something the Flyers could definitely pull off.

The only thing that really stand in the way of this trade is what the Flyers would be willing to part with. Toronto will want draft picks and prospects. The Flyers have a few picks that they could part with, but they don't have a heck of a lot of prospects to give up.

Players that the Leafs will most likely target are that of Andreas Nodl and James van Riemsdyk. Maybe even Nikolay Zherdev. Philly could get away with trading Zherdev, since he likely won't be back next year, and would create enough cap space to fit Giguere in without having to use the space they already have. That could leave the Flyers with even more cap space in order to possibly acquire another player as well.

The question is, would Toronto be willing to take Zherdev, and are the Flyers willing to part with him? It would make sense for both teams, but a deal isn't done until it's done. Even if Giguere doesn't end up in Philadelphia, you can be rest assured Philly will be making a splash before the playoffs.
