NHL Rumours: Why Tomas Vokoun Only Got $1.5 Million from the Washington Capitals

Posted 08/26/2011 - 13:24 by HockeyPolls

Many people (myself included) thought the reason that Tomas Vokoun took a one-year $1.5 million deal with the Washington Capitals was so he could win a championship. In other words, I thought he wanted to take less to be with a winner. The Detroit Red Wings also offered around the same amount to back up Jimmy Howard.

The Top Five Vezina Candidates for the 2011-12 Season

Last season Tim Thomas took the NHL by storm and captured his second Vezina trophy—awarded to the league's best goaltender—in dominating fashion.  Tim Thomas has two wins in the past three years, Martin Brodeur had four wins in five NHL seasons from 2002-2008, and Dominik Hasek ruled the '90s as he pulled in six trophies.  Despite the award's veteran tendencies, there is always room for a surprise candidate to rule the ice for a year, from Ryan Miller—off an MVP Olympic year—to Jose Theodore, who won the Hart and

Washington Capitals: 5 Caps Players with Something to Prove in 2011-2012

It's a new season, and the Caps roster looks relatively new. There isn't a Caps fan in the world who isn't excited to see what this team can do.

There are quite a lot of players on that team that have faced a lot of criticism recently, last year in particular, and those players go into the new season with everything to prove.

Here is our pick of the top five Capitals players with things to prove in 2011/12:

NHL Fantasy Hockey: Projections for Ilya Bryzgalov and More Goalies, Defensemen

The shopping spree for goalies and defensemen was fast and furious as soon as the free-agent stores were open for business.

Detroit Red Wings: Why They Are Continuous Contenders

Posted 07/15/2011 - 10:54 by HockeyPolls

A few days ago several blogs reported that the Detroit Red Wings were finalists for top free agent netminder Tomas Vokoun, and that they lost out on the guy when the Washington Capitals signed him to a one year, 1.5 million dollar deal—a deal that I fe

NHL Free Agency 2011: 5 Best Value Signings so Far

Last Friday marked the kick off of NHL Free Agency 2011.

As some teams opened up their checkbooks and started signing free agents, people began to raise eye brows at some of the length and dollar figures of some of the contracts that were signed.

As a Red Wings fan, I was most unimpressed with the signing of Jonathan Ericsson for $3.25 million a year for three years. I cannot strongly say that he will be worth it in the long run, but hey, I'm not Ken Holland.

NHL: Will 2011 Be the Washington Capital's Year?

After another disappointing playoff exit, the Washington Capitals might just see their fortunes change.

Alexander Ovechkin has been the NHL's most exciting and popular player for the past six years now, but has always failed to carry the Capitals to lifting the Cup. Not entirely his fault, not by a long shot, but you always expect your team's top player to step up when it matters the most—right Canucks fans?

Philadelphia Flyers: Who Is the Better Option, Ilya Bryzgalov or Tomas Vokoun?

Posted 06/04/2011 - 07:04 by HockeyPolls

I've said it before and I will say it again. The Flyers' goaltending this past playoffs was substandard, almost to the point of being downright atrocious.

It is widely acknowledged that the Flyers need to improve their goaltending before next season, and it is consequently widely expected that GM Paul Holmgren will take the necessary steps to do so.

NHL Free Agents 2011: Power Ranking the Top 11 Goalies Likely To Change Uniforms

NHL free agency 2011 is not that far off. There is quite the crop of high-profile free agents out there, including goaltenders.

Florida goaltender Tomas Vokoun is a free agent and rumors have been circulating all year that he won't be returning to the Panthers. Phoenix goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov will be a free agent as well.

Other teams like the Tampa Bay Lightning could use better backup goaltending. Luckily for them, there will be plenty of other free-agent goaltenders available this offseason.

Here are the top 11 goaltenders who are most likely to change uniforms.
