Detroit Red Wings: Injuries and Free Agency To Determine Future in Net

Injuries have knocked both Jimmy Howard and Chris Osgood out of net for the Detroit Red Wings.  Osgood will be out at least six to eight weeks as he recovers from a sports hernia.  Howard’s injury initially looked bad, but it appears he will be back this week.

Beyond the injury concerns is the fact that both of these goalies will be free agents after this season.  What are the Red Wings' plans?  Will they bring in someone before the trade deadline, sign Howard long-term or bring in somebody in the offseason?

At the start of hockey season, experts contended that while very talented, the New York Rangers were simply too young and underdeveloped a team to make a statement in an Eastern Conference headlined by superstars Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby.

Henrik Lunqvist or Martin Biron?: Who Will Start Tonight for New York Rangers?

Tonight the Rangers take on the Boston Bruins in Boston in their first matchup of the season. Usually these games produce very small scores, and become major goaltending duels as the game grows on. The New York Rangers practiced Friday morning and John Tortorella is still questioning who he will start in tonight’s game.

Will it be All-Star goaltender Henrik Lundqvist or backup goaltender Martin Biron.

New York Rangers: Ex-Isles Goalie Martin Biron Will Be Reason They Make Playoffs

Every team in the NHL needs a good backup goalie. No matter how good the starting goalie may be, the reality is that a goalie in the NHL needs off-days, especially if the team wants to contend for the playoffs and the Stanley Cup.

The Rangers added that good backup goalie this offseason when they signed former Islander Martin Biron to give Henrik Lundqvist a break during the season.

The Rangers have finally found a way to ensure that they won’t be forced to overwork goalie Henrik Lundqvist , as they have signed an experienced backup goalie in Martin Biron to a two-year, $1.7 million deal according to Larry Brooks of the NY Post.

New York Rangers Sign Martin Biron to Bargain Basement Deal

The New York Rangers took my advice and locked up goaltender Martin Biron just one minute after free agency opened up at noon. According to Bob Mackenzie, the deal is for two years at $1.8 million total.

This is an incredible move, and is even less than what Alex Auld was reportedly seeking. Hats off to Glen Sather. He addressed one of the Rangers most important needs right off the bat, without breaking the bank. The contract he received from the Rangers is even less than what he got from the Islanders last season.
