Be Careful What You Wish for: Understanding the Ilya Kovalchuk Saga

Ilya Kovalchuk is a rare talent. There have been only a handful of players in the history of the NHL who could be counted on to score 40 or more goals every season. He is one of those few.

But I do NOT want him on my team.

My team is the New York Islanders. As you should know by now, if you have not been stranded on Gilligan's Island, the Islanders were confirmed as one of three teams aggressively pursuing Kovy. And you should also know that the Islanders have ended that pursuit.

April 4, 1998 is one of those days that will live forever in Ranger-Islander lore. That was the day the Islanders won the game but lost the fight. The fight specifically between goaltenders Dan Cloutier and Tommy Salo.

1.  The Isles grabbed the early lead as Kyle Okposo and Sean Begenheim scored 62 seconds apart to give the Isles a 2-0 lead before the first television timeout. It was Okposo's 17th goal of the season, one fewer than he had last season when he led the squad.

In my earlier article today I had made mention of the flu affecting certain players of the Buffalo Sabres team. Never did I know that the entire team must have been going through sympathy illness for their ill comrades.

Tonight the Buffalo Sabres went into the island to collect what some would consider an easy two points. Problem was no one told the Buffalo Sabres about how easy those two points really should have been to attain.
