Buffalo Sabres Won a Thriller for the Flight 3407 Victims in 2009

Posted 07/26/2010 - 11:00 by HockeyPolls

February 13, 2009 was a lot more than just a game between the Buffalo Sabres and San Jose Sharks. A plane crash in Clarence Center left the entire city of Buffalo devastated.

The National Hockey League questioned whether or not the game should be played.

A few of the Sabres had family and friends that lived in the area, and many people knew some of the victims that died in the plane crash of flight 3407. It was a sad evening for the town, and Buffalo honored the victims with a moment of silence before the game started.

NHL Trade Rumors: 10 Teams That Would Love To Deal for Tomas Kaberle

Posted 07/25/2010 - 20:14 by HockeyPolls

The longest tenured Maple Leaf, Tomas Kaberle has one year left on his $4.25 million contract. At 32 he is nearing the end of his career, but he comes at a reasonable price and could instantly upgrade a team's defensive corps.

Many teams are in pursuit of this blueliner. The Leafs will need the right offer to deal Kaberle, as they have made many additions to their team and are looking to be competitve this year.

Explanation of statistics provided:

NHL Free Agency: Top 10 Free Agent Right Wings Still Available

If a team is still looking for a right wing this off-season, they're going to have to look from the very top of the list "right" down to the very bottom in hopes of finding one on the free agent market.

Bad puns aside, that could very well be true. From the very start of NHL free agency this summer, which opened July 1st, the pool of UFA right wings has been very, very shallow.

NHL Free Agency: Joe "Scorvo" Corvo Returning to Carolina Hurricanes

Posted 07/08/2010 - 08:49 by HockeyPolls

Joe Corvo is returning to Raleigh.

After being traded to Washington at the 2010 Trade Deadline in a deal that sent a 2011 second rounder (eventually traded to Philadelphia for Jonathan Matsumoto), prospect Oskar Osala (in the AHL), and defenseman Brian Pothier (now a free agent) to Carolina, Corvo is once again coming back to a place where he just might have prospered the most.

Boston Bruins' Offseason Gameplan: Three Crucial Moves To Success

Posted 07/06/2010 - 11:06 by HockeyPolls

It was mostly a forgetful season for us Bruins' fans with so many ups and downs. At first it seemed like a purely down year, one full of injuries and one of the most under-achieving offenses in the game. The Bruins netted an average of only 2.39 goals per game after finishing second in the NHL the year prior with 3.29 goals per contest.

But then there was hope—The Bruins finished off the heavily favored Sabres in six and sent Olympic phenom Ryan Miller to the golf course much earlier than I’m sure anyone had anticipated.

NHL Free Agency: Mike Modano Won't Be Back With the Dallas Stars

Posted 06/29/2010 - 22:46 by HockeyPolls

For some terribly awful reason, Dallas general manager Joe Nieuwendyk announced earlier today that the team will not be resigning long-time Star Mike Modano should he choose not to retire.

Modano, now 40, has spent all 20 years of his career within the franchise, beginning in 1988 when he became the second American-born player to be drafted first overall.

After being drafted by the Minnesota North Stars, Modano followed the team on their move to Dallas, won a Stanley Cup in 1999, and was named captain in 2003.

New York Islanders Roll the Dice with Kirill Kabanov and Nino Niederreiter

Steals? Risks? Gambles? We won't know for some time whether the moves the New York Islanders made at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft will help or hurt the team, but we do know one thing for sure:

They lead the league in guys named "Kirill."

Two years after taking Kirill Petrov in the third round of the 2008 draft, the Isles went to Russia again in the third round and selected Kirill Kabanov in what could be the steal of the draft, considering Kabanov had been ranked as high as the top three in the draft class within the past year, and 15th at the midterm.

2010 NHL Draft First Round Recap: Surprise Picks and Plunges Highlight Night

Posted 06/26/2010 - 10:44 by HockeyPolls

The first player selected at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft in Los Angeles last night was right wing Taylor Hall, the newest player to receive their Edmonton Oilers jersey.

That pick, at least, was expected.

The second player selected at the draft, this time by the Boston Bruins, was center Tyler Seguin.

That choice was also relatively easy to predict.
