NHL Ranking: 10 Players Whose Former Teams Would Love to Get Them Back

Every year there are dozens of trades and waiver-wire acquisitions in the NHL. Perhaps not as many as we would like come deadline day, but still plenty of activity.

Add to that the yearly frenzy to sign free agents on July 1, and there is significant roster movement in the NHL.

Here is a look at 10 players who changed teams in the past year and who would be in a position to help their former team this year... if they hadn't been shipped out of town. Hindsight is 20-20 after all.

Brendan Morrison Signs One-Year Deal With The Calgary Flames

On Sunday Brendan Morrison was released from his Vancouver Canucks training camp tryout contract. The 12-year NHL veteran was not out of work for very long, on Monday the Calgary Flames signed him to a one-year deal.

When given the chance to try out for the Canucks, Morrison said, “I see myself as a guy who can fit on any line, and any role they present me with is one that I am willing to take on.”

NHL Buzz: The Latest on Brendan Morrison, Nazem Kadri, The Devils, and More

Just a few days after the Vancouver Canucks released Brendan Morrison from his pro tryout, the Calgary Flames jumped on Morrison and signed him to a one-year contract worth $750,000.

My take: I have heard rumors that the Flames were interested in him from the get go and as soon as I heard the Flames were looking to add another forward, I knew something was up.

The Vancouver Canucks finish off their preseason schedule tonight, Friday Oct. 1.

Although we know who the star players will be, we have yet to determine who will play the role of supporting cast on this team.

With Alex Burrows recovering from an off-season shoulder operation and out until probably mid-November, the Sedin twins will start the year with countryman Mikael Samuelsson.

Toronto Maple Leafs: Possible Fits at Centre From Around The League

I was reading through the many Leafs forums that I scour for angles and thoughts on our beloved Buds and I came across a list posted by a guy named Colledgedude84. Credit given where credit is due.

I had to agree, after scanning these players that some caught my eye, and some of these guys could be good possibilities for that second/third/fourth-line centre Toronto is in desperate need of.

NHL Free Agents 2010: Five UFAs Who Can Push Your Team To The Cup For Cheap

NHL Free Agents 2010: The NHL has become a very turbulent atmosphere for unrestricted free agents this past summer. While some players—such as Ilya Kovalchuk— have signed huge long-term deals, others—such as veteran Bill Guerin—have been left out in the cold.

In an offseason where teams were content to let players walk away over thousands of dollars, being a free agent was a curse. When the Stanley Cup champions let their goaltender leave over less than $500,000, things didn't look good for the rest of the UFA crop.

Survival of the Fittest: The Canucks Have 18 Forwards Fighting for 6 Positions

After being pushed around by the Chicago Blackhawks in the playoffs two years in a row, Vancouver Canucks' GM Mike Gillis made it a priority for the Canucks to be bigger, tougher, and generally harder to play against.

On defense, this was done by bringing in Keith Ballard (5'11" 208 lbs) and Dan Hamhuis (6'2" 205 lbs), a pair of durable defensemen.

Blast from the Past: Could Peter Schaefer and Brendan Morrison Be Canucks Again?

Turning back the clock, GM Mike Gillis has invited former Canucks' Peter Schaefer and Brendan Morrison to training camp (If only Matte Cooke wasn't signed with the Penguins, we could recreate the Schaefer/Morrison/Cooke third line from the 2000-2001 edition of the Canucks). The two former Canucks are in camp to try and win a contract, so at least Gillis hasn't gone the route of Calgary GM Darryl Sutter and signed them to multi-year deals ahead of camp.
